De vergeten beelden van Scott: tragische poolreiziger met camera op Art Rotterdam
Op de kunstbeurs Art Rotterdam onthult Salto Ulbeek een bijzonder stukje geschiedenis. In hun stand zijn het niet de hedendaagse meesters, maar de ontdekkingsreiziger Robert Falcon Scott die de aandacht trekt. Historicus en kunstenaar Jean de Pomereu vertelt over een vergeten aspect van de noodlottige Zuidpoolexpeditie: de foto’s die Scott zelf maakte.
“Many people know about Scott's diaries,” zegt De Pomereu in het interview. “The actual physical diary was recovered after his death in the tent. And now it's in the British Library as one of the treasures.” Maar, zo benadrukt hij, er is meer. “Few people know about his photographs. He actually took 113 photographs around the base camp at Cape Evans, but also on the journey south to the South Pole.”
Die foto’s zijn opmerkelijk, omdat ze genomen werden door een man die geen professionele fotograaf was. Toen de officiële fotograaf Herbert Ponting te oud bleek voor de barre tocht naar de pool, was het Scott die de camera overnam. “Ponting taught Scott photography,” legt De Pomereu uit. “Scott was not a professional photographer, but he grasped it. He had a little vest pocket Kodak.”
Het resultaat is een reeks beelden die volgens De Pomereu een bijna voorspellende kracht hebben. “They are actually just like incredible in that they’re haunting, you know, especially if you know the end of the story. They seem to foreshadow the ending as they’re taken, because you see them walking into the whiteness with their ponies and you see them try to struggle with their sledges in the deep snow.”
In de stand van Salto Ulbeek hangen zes van deze beelden, waaronder de laatste foto die Scott ooit nam. “This is the last photograph that Scott took,” vertelt De Pomereu. “And you see them out of focus going into the empty whiteness.” Het zijn beelden die getuigen van een verrassend gevoel voor compositie. “You realize that actually he had an eye. He was not a professional photographer, but he had a sensitivity and a very good eye.”
Een schat uit het archief
De foto’s zijn geen vondsten van de straat. Ze komen rechtstreeks uit Britse archieven. “I work with the archives in the UK, which own these negatives, Scott's negatives,” zegt De Pomereu. Samen met Georges Charlier van Salto Ulbeek werkt hij aan het ontsluiten van dit vergeten erfgoed. Het werk beperkt zich niet tot Scott. “We’re expanding our range to alpine photography as well. There’s a project here on George Mallory, who was maybe or maybe not the first person to get to the top of Everest in 1924. So he took photographs. He’s a bit like Scott.”
De aanpak is steeds hetzelfde: terug naar de bron. “Our idea is to really go back to these archival sources which are not very well known and which we can enhance and represent,” aldus De Pomereu.
Die samenwerking met de archieven is cruciaal. Op de vraag of de rechten vrij zijn, is het antwoord ontkennend. “No, so we work with the archives and, you know, we work with them so that they take part of the profits. Profits are hard to come by, but yes, so we cover the costs of manufacturing and printing.”

Meer dan een afdruk: een erfstuk
De keuze voor de techniek is niet toevallig. De Pomereu, zelf historicus en kunstenaar, zet sterk in op de kwaliteit en de duurzaamheid van de edities. “These prints are made in a technique that’s called platinum palladium, which is a 19th century photographic technique,” legt hij uit. In plaats van zilver gebruikt men een mengsel van platina en palladium. “Which are some of the most stable and rarest elements in the universe, much more stable than silver. So these prints will outlive any silver prints, and they’ll outlive the actual negatives.”
Ook het papier is gekozen met het oog op de eeuwigheid. “It’s 100% cotton paper, so very, very stable.”
Het is geen toeval dat Salto Ulbeek, met de Belgische uitgever Georges Charlier aan het roer, deze werken presenteert op een kunstbeurs. Samen brengen ze een dramatische ontdekkingsreis terug op de meest voorbeeldige wijze afgedrukt en vereeuwigd.
