Star (Sasha Lane) joins a roving group of young people who sell magazines door to door. The group is led by Krystal (Riley Keough) and rebelliously and partying through the American Midwest in a van. Along the way, Star falls for the charms of her rebellious colleague Jake (Shia LaBeouf). Also think of Coppola's Rumble Fish or Gus van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy. Ronald Glasbergen introduces the film with images and stories about the movies context and its director.

De latste film van Andrea Arnold (FISH TANK) is een roadmovie waarin de huidige generatie jongeren op zoek is naar vrijheid en liefde. De 18-jarige Star (Sasha Lane) sluit zich aan bij een avontuurlijke groep jongeren die huis aan huis tijdschriften verkoopt. De groep wordt geleid door Krystal (Riley Keough) en doorkruist rebellerend en feestend de Amerikaanse Midwest in een busje. Onderweg valt Star voor de charmes van haar opstandige collega Jake (Shia LaBeouf). AMERICAN HONEY heeft reeds vele prijzen gewonnen, waaronder de Jury Prijs in Cannes en Beste Britse Onafhankelijke Film, Beste Regie en Beste Actrice (Sasha Lane) bij de British Independent Film Awards.

“Anybody gonna miss you?” “Not really.” “Good, you’re hired.” This is how teenager Star (a striking debut by Sasha Lane) begins a career as a hawker of magazines when she leaves home and joins a motley group of young people (most of whom are played by amateurs) as they smoke weed, sing, make love, steal, quarrel and fight their way across the USA in a van, in the first American film by British director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights). This energetically meandering On the Road for millennials has a soundtrack rich in hip-hop and is filmed in a hand-held, documentary style. Here, freedom is not (as it was for Kerouac) the dream, but the enemy. Like all road movies, American Honey is about an inner journey (along the way Star falls for her flirty colleague Jake, played by Shia LaBeouf), meanwhile giving a rare impression of young people trying to find their way in the underbelly of American society.

AMERICAN HONEY has won many awards, including the Jury Prize at Cannes and Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Actress (Sasha Lane) at the British Independent Film Awards.
